Top quality living soil at only 10 cents per pound for our HVO Triple Mix for Gardens.

A complete growing mix for Big Island beds and plots. Three ingredients in one, blended and ready to plant. Fill the bed, water it in, and plant the same day.

$159 per cubic yard, delivered.

What is in it

  • Premium Topsoil: real soil with structure for roots to spread into and hold onto
  • Black Volcanic Cinder: hard to find cinder that opens the mix for drainage and air at the roots
  • Bokashi Compost: horse manure, fresh greens, and hardwood sawdust fermented with our Hawaiian Bokashi Inoculant

Why it works

  • Living soil, not worn-out cane fill
  • 29.3% organic matter, the carbon that feeds soil biology and holds moisture
  • Drains fast so roots never sit in water
  • Holds nutrients in place instead of letting them leach through
  • Gets richer every season instead of wearing out
  • Blended and ready, so you plant the day it arrives

Best for

Raised beds, vegetable gardens, garden plots, orchard plantings, fruit trees, herbs, flower beds, and large containers.

How to use it

Raised beds and planters: fill, water deeply, plant directly. No waiting period. Garden plots: spread 2 to 3 inches and work into the top 6 inches of native ground. Containers: use as a complete growing mix, or blend half and half with your potting soil. Top dressing: lay a 1 inch layer around established plants and water in.

What one yard covers: about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or roughly three 4 by 8 foot raised beds at 8 inches.

Delivery and pickup: Delivered across East Hawaii including Hilo, Keaʻau, Puna, HPP, Mountain View, Ocean View, and Glenwood. Farm pickup is available with an $8 loading fee. Call or text 808-425-0474 with your address and bed sizes for a quote.

Triple Mix for Gardens Living Soil, Not Fill.

What is in the mix

Each part does one job.

Nutrition, drainage, and living biology. Blended in the right ratio so you are not sourcing three materials and guessing at the mix yourself.

  • A pile of brown organic top soil, mix of nutrient-rich soil and red cinder, for gardening.

    Premium Topsoil

Real soil with structure, not screened fill. It gives roots something to spread into and hold onto as the plant establishes.

  • Black Cinder soil

    Black Volcanic Cinder

Hard to source on island and worth the trouble. Cinder opens the mix so water moves through and air reaches the root zone instead of sitting around it.

  • Large pile of brown mulch against a blue sky

    Bokashi Compost

Horse manure, fresh greens, and indigenous hardwood sawdust fermented with our Hawaiian Bokashi Inoculant. It feeds the soil, holds nutrients in place, and keeps building season after season.

Nutrient-rich organic compost and Hawaiian volcanic soil for sustainable farming.

The Carbon That Does The Work

Organic matter is the fraction of soil that feeds biology, holds water through a dry stretch, and keeps nutrients from washing straight past the roots. Our analysis returns a full spectrum of nutrients alongside an organic matter reading well above what ordinary fill delivers.

  • Holds moisture so beds ride out the gaps between rain
  • Feeds soil biology that makes nutrients available to roots
  • Buffers nutrients instead of letting them leach through
  • Improves with age rather than wearing out over a season

Planting Trees Instead of Beds

Triple Mix for Gardens is our proven blend of topsoil, black cinder, and Bokashi compost, built for raised beds, garden plots, and containers. Setting fruit trees instead? Our Bokashi Fruit Tree Mix is this same blend with clean aged wood chips added on top to hold moisture around a young tree. Twenty dollars more a yard, blended and delivered the same way.

Bokashi Fruit Tree Mix Triple Mix plus aged wood chips $149

Buying topsoil, black cinder, and compost separately means three orders, three prices, and mixing it yourself. This is blended for you at $159 a cubic yard, delivered.

  • Raised Beds

Fill and plant the same day. Greens, tomatoes, beans, squash, and everything else in the vegetable garden.

  • Garden Plots

Spread and work into tired native ground to rebuild structure and biology in place.

  • Fruit Trees

Citrus, avocado, mango, papaya, banana, lychee, cacao, coffee, and the rest of the island orchard.

  • Large Containers

Half barrels and big pots where drainage and steady feeding both matter.

  • Herbs and Flower Beds

Basil, cilantro, ti, heliconia, and ornamental beds that want free-draining living soil.

  • Rebuilding Tired Ground

Beds that have run out after a few seasons. Top up and bring the biology back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is most of the dirt sold on the Big Island not good for growing?

Almost all of the dirt sold and hauled around the island comes from former sugarcane land. That ground was farmed in cane for over 100 years, in many areas right up until the 1990s. A century of industrial monocropping strips the soil of nutrients and organic matter and leaves it biologically dead. It is fill dirt, not living soil.

What is in Triple Mix for Gardens?

Three ingredients. Premium topsoil for a rooting base, black volcanic cinder for drainage and air at the roots, and our Bokashi-enriched compost for living soil biology.

What is Bokashi compost?

Bokashi is a Japanese fermentation method. We ferment horse manure, fresh greens, and indigenous hardwood sawdust with our Hawaiian Bokashi Inoculant, a blend of beneficial microbes. The result feeds soil biology, holds nutrients in place, and keeps improving the ground season after season.

Is the soil tested?

Yes. Our soil is analyzed by the University of Hawaii and returns a full spectrum of nutrients along with 29.3% organic matter.

How much do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or fills roughly three 4 by 8 foot raised beds at 8 inches. Call or text 808-425-0474 with your bed sizes and we will size the order with you.

Can I plant in it right away?

Yes. It arrives blended and ready. Fill the bed, water deeply, and plant the same day.

I see white growth in the pile. Is that a problem?

No. White mycelium is a normal sign of biologically active soil. Turn it in and carry on.

How much does it cost and how do I order?

$159 a cubic yard, delivered across East Hawaii. Farm pickup has an $8 loading fee. Call or text 808-425-0474 with your address and how much ground you are covering, and we will size the load and quote delivery.
