ABOUT HAWAIIAN VOLCANIC ORGANIC

One of the first Certified Organic Farms in the United States of America.

My first Organic Farm was in 1982 in the mountains of Southern California, adjacent to the National Forest. We were part of California Certified Organics Farmers (CCOF). Before our Certification, we provided produce to local Churches for their outreach programs. Now, over 40 years later, I find myself on the fertile Big Island of Hawaii. We are on 25 acres of tropical jungle in the mountains of Hawaii. This is Agricultural Land or, as we know it, AG Land! The topsoil here is over 10 feet deep and a great place to farm. My first greenhouse consisted of local soil and black cinder. Black cinder is a volcanic product that keeps the soil aerated, drains well, and has the structure that supports IMO’s (indigenous micro-organisms) and micro-nutrients.

Our 64-Year Heritage: From Cattle Ranch to Living Soil

For over six decades before Hawaiian Volcanic Organic Farm existed, this remarkable 25-acre Glenwood property served as a working cattle ranch. Generations of cattle roamed freely across volcanic slopes, and their grazing created something extraordinary.

  • Nature's Composting System

Year after year, cow manure naturally blended with fallen jungle leaves, native ferns, and forest litter. In Hawaii's wet tropical climate, this organic cycle built a deep layer of humus-rich soil—reaching over 10 feet deep in places. This wasn't industrial agriculture—this was nature composting for half a century.

The cattle provided nitrogen-rich manure, the rainforest contributed carbon and minerals, and Hawaii's volcanic parent material supplied trace elements. Together, they created one of the Big Island's most fertile topsoils.

  • Living Soil with Indigenous Microbes

What makes this soil truly special is the thriving community of Indigenous Micro Organisms (IMOs) that evolved over decades. These beneficial microbes are perfectly adapted to Hawaii's climate and volcanic chemistry—breaking down organic matter, cycling nutrients, and creating the complex ecosystem that defines true "living soil."

When you use our topsoil, you're importing a biological community that jump-starts plant growth. These aren't mainland microbes struggling to adapt these are indigenous organisms evolved for exactly these conditions.

  • Stewardship, Not Mining

Today, we carefully harvest this topsoil so Big Island families can grow their own food in truly living soil. Every cubic yard carries six decades of naturally built fertility—something you simply cannot find in depleted "fill dirt" from old sugarcane fields.

This is the foundation of real organic growing: soil with history, biology, and proven fertility.

University of Hawaii Soil Analysis: Scientific Proof

Top-Rated Soil Analyzed by the University of Hawaii

You don't have to take our word for it. The University of Hawaii's comprehensive analysis provides scientific verification of our topsoil's exceptional quality. Click below to see the detailed results.

Organic Matter: 29.3%

Exceptionally high organic content provides sustained fertility and improves soil structure. Compare this to typical fill dirt from sugarcane fields (often <5% organic matter). This level of organic matter means:
✓ Better moisture retention
✓ Improved soil structure
✓ Slow-release nutrients
✓ Enhanced microbial habitat

Essential Nutrients

Laboratory-verified nutrient levels:

  • Calcium: 117.4 mg/kg - Critical for plant cell walls and structure
  • Magnesium: 55.4 mg/kg - Essential for chlorophyll and photosynthesis
  • Plant-Available Nitrogen: 38.14 mg/kg - Ready for immediate plant use

These aren't just good numbers—they're exceptional for natural topsoil. No synthetic fertilizers needed to get started.

Clean & Safe: Zero Contaminants

Laboratory testing found:
✓ NO arsenic detected
✓ NO heavy metals
✓ NO pesticide residues
✓ Safe for organic certification

Unlike soil from industrial agricultural lands, our topsoil is clean and ready for growing food crops.

vs. Sugarcane "Dead Dirt"

Local gravel pit topsoil (from old sugarcane lands):

❌ Depleted organic matter (<3%)
❌ Compacted from heavy machinery
❌ Sterile—no beneficial microbes
❌ May contain chemical residues
❌ Requires extensive amendments

Our Glenwood topsoil:

✅ 29.3% organic matter
✅ Naturally structured
✅ Living microbial community
✅ Clean, certified organic
✅ Ready to grow from day one
