S4C (1/2 Inch Minus) Pipe Bedding Rock

S4C is 1/2 inch rock graded down to fines, a fine, evenly blended material designed to compact in controlled layers. Its defining use is as a pipe cushion, or bedding, for metal and PVC lines. The fine, uniform texture lets it surround the pipe completely and support it evenly along its length, which protects the line from point loads and from the stress of settling backfill.

To work as intended, S4C is placed in lifts and compacted both beneath and around the pipe so there are no voids. That even support is what keeps a buried line from cracking or deforming over time. Because it is fine and compactable rather than free-draining, it is a bedding material first and is not meant for places where water needs to move through the layer.

Pipe bedding is one of the areas where building codes are updated often, and the approved material can differ by pipe type and by jurisdiction.
