1 1/2 Inch Base Course Gravel for Driveways and Pads
1 1/2 Inch Base Course Gravel for Driveways and Pads
1 1/2 Inch Base Course, also called 1 1/2 minus, is 1 1/2 inch rock graded down to fines. It is finer than 2 1/2 inch base course, which lets it compact into a tighter, smoother layer that sits closer to a finished surface. That makes it a versatile material: it works as a second base layer over 6 Inch Minus or 2 1/2 Inch Base Course under a house pad, and it stands on its own where a thinner, finer lift is all the job needs.
On driveways, parking areas, and leveling work that does not call for much depth, this grade gives a solid, compactable surface that knits together well. The blend of rock and fines is what allows it to bind under regular traffic, so once it is laid and compacted it holds its line rather than scattering. Run it in a controlled lift, compact it, and it provides a clean, firm grade.
Where it fits in the layering sequence depends on the build. On a deeper pad it is the finer cap over coarser base; on a lighter job it can be the main base course by itself. Because it is not a clean drain rock, keep it out of areas with standing water or heavy run-off, where a wash rock will perform better and last longer.
