Rip Rap (4 to 12 Inch) for Walls and Erosion Control

Rip Rap in the 4 to 12 inch range is clean, angular stone with no sand in the mix, sized and shaped specifically to lock together and stay in place. Those angular faces are what set it apart from rounded rock: they wedge against one another so the layer resists shifting, even under the push of moving water or the weight of a wall. It is a standard material for rock walls and retaining walls where stability is the priority.

The same size and weight make it one of the most effective materials for erosion control. Placed along slopes, channels, drainage ways, and shorelines, rip rap armors the ground and breaks up the energy of flowing water before it can wash soil away. It holds ground that lighter materials simply cannot, which is why it is the default choice for protecting banks and controlling run-off on larger sites.

On the Big Island, where heavy rain and run-off are a regular fact of life, rip rap earns its keep on slopes and water courses that would otherwise erode. The 4 to 12 inch range is the heavier-duty grade, suited to bigger walls and higher-energy water. Where a job calls for a tighter, more uniform stone or easier hand placement, the 3 to 8 inch rip rap is the better fit.
