HVO.Farm Soil Recommendations for Growing Soycia Grass

HVO.Farm Soil Recommendations for Growing Soycia Grass

400 ft Elevation Project – Using Hawaiian Volcanic Organic Farm Top Soil

Current Site Conditions

  • Black Cinder Base:
    • layer of black cinder is already installed, providing excellent drainage and root aeration.
  • Top Soil Characteristics:
    • HVO.Farm Top Soil is nutrient-rich but heavy (dense organic material with moisture retention properties).

Recommended Top Soil Application

  • Depth of Top Soil Over Cinder:
    • Spread 4 to 5 inches of HVO.Farm Top Soil over the existing cinder base.

This lighter layer prevents excessive compaction while still giving enough richness for soycia root growth.

Soil-to-Cinder Ratio Recommendation

  • Top Dressing Mix Ratio:
    • Blend 60% HVO.Farm Top Soil + 40% Black Cinder before applying it over the base.

Blending extra cinder into the heavy top soil lightens it, improving drainage and preventing waterlogging without losing fertility.

  • Why 60/40?
    • At 400 ft elevation, rainfall can be moderate to heavy.
    • Soycia grass needs both good drainage and consistent moisture, not
      waterlogged soil.
    • The 60/40 blend creates a lighter, airier soil structure ideal for sod plugs and stolons to spread and root quickly.
Successful Soycia Planting

Additional Tips for Successful Soycia Planting

  • Starter Fertilizer:
    • Before installing plugs and stolons, lightly sprinkle Organic Chicken Pellets to promote faster rooting.
  • Top Dressing:
    • After planting plugs/stolons, lightly top-dress with an additional ½ inch of the 60/40 blend to encourage quick stolon spread.
  • Watering Schedule:
    • Keep soil evenly moist for the first 3–4 weeks — avoid letting it fully dry out or become muddy.
