Tree Planting Soil and Fertilizer Recommendations

HVO.Farm Tree Planting Soil and Fertilizer Recommendations

For Grafted Durian, Lychee, Breadfruit, Mango, and Avocado Trees. All grafted but most are young. 8 months youngest, oldest 2 years

Recommended Soil Mix (Initial Planting)

  • Top Soil Base:
Use Hawaiian Volcanic Organic Farm Top Soil as the main component. Rich, biologically active, and ideal for tropical fruit trees.
  • Black Cinder Ratio:
Mix 70% Top Soil + 30% Black Cinder

Black cinder improves aeration, drainage, and root oxygenation — essential for young grafted trees adjusting to transplant shock.

Initial Phase: Root Development (Planting to 6 months after planting)

  • Primary Goals: Strong root establishment, mycorrhizal colonization, balanced moisture retention.
  • Inoculants:
    • HVO.Farm Mycorrhizal Inoculant (recommended) – Apply directly to root ball at planting.
    • Alternative: MycoApply® or BioOrganics™ Mycorrhizae if additional product is needed.
  • Fertilizers:
    • HVO.Farm Organic Chicken Pellets – Lightly incorporate into the planting hole and top-dress monthly.
    • Supplement:
      • Root Builder (e.g., Biostimulant like Seaweed Extract/Kelp Meal) every 2 weeks.
      • Examples:
        • Maxicrop® Liquid Seaweed (outside product)
        • Organic Neptune’s Harvest® Kelp Meal
  • Soil Additions:
  • Sprinkle HVO.Farm Bokashi Granules into the topsoil monthly to boost microbial life.
Foliage Growth Phase

Foliage Growth Phase (6 to 18 months after planting)

      • Example: Alaska® Fish Fertilizer (5-1-1) or Fish Hydrolysate.
  • Supplements:
    • Silica Supplement – 2-3x per growing season (strengthens cell walls, disease resistance).
      • Example: Armor Si® or Grower's Secret Silica.

Flowering Initiation Phase (18 to 30 months after planting, depending on species)

  • Primary Goals: Transition energy from foliage to flower production.
  • Fertilizers:
    • Low Nitrogen, High Phosphorus Organic Fertilizer (e.g., 2-8-4 or 3-10-5) monthly starting 3-4 months before expected flowering.
      • Bloom Booster (coming soon)
      • Outside: Down to Earth® BioLive (5-4-2) + Bone Meal.
  • Supplements:
    • Add Langbeinite (Sul-Po-Mag) – for Magnesium, Potassium, Sulfur – once at start of flowering cycle.
    • Rock Phosphate or Soft Phosphate – for long-term phosphorus supply.
Fruit Development and Ripening

Fruit Development and Ripening Phase (After Flower Set)

  • Primary Goals: Maximize fruit size, sweetness, and resilience.
  • Fertilizers:
    • Potassium-Rich Supplement – bi-weekly drench or soil amendment.
      • Example:
        • Potassium Booster (recommended)
        • Outside: Organic K-Mag (0-0-22).
  • Supplements:
    • Continue Kelp Extract Foliar Sprays every 2-3 weeks.
